Bill White, owner of Fish in the Hood, is in the hospital and his family could use your help

Bill White is an awesome guy. I first met him several years ago at his restaurant Fish in the Neighborhood on Georgia Avenue in Park View. Known as “Fish in the Hood,” the restaurant is one of the best places in DC to get fresh seafood. The popular restaurant has gone through ups and downs, a fire, issues with his landlord and still has stayed open to serve the community.

Bill is in the hospital with a lung infection and collapsed lung, and doesn’t have insurance. His step-mother has organized a GoFundMe to help cover costs.

The ANCs are redrawing their borders — and you can have a say

The ANCs are redrawing their borders — and you can have a say

Ever since moving to Brightwood Park, I’ve wondered why my ANC is 4B, while the other three corners of my intersection belong to ANC 4D. My Single Member District 4B05 is bisected by Missouri Avenue, a large physical divide between the two halves of my SMD. For things like requesting parking zones on my block or finding out how to get speed bumps, I’ve had to deal with two SMD Commissioners and two ANCs.

How does this work?

DistrictBATCH: Park View neighbor shares her experience running a woman-owned small business

In 2019, I first heard of District BATCH and owner Marisa Martino through mutual friends who touted their natural deodorant as the best purchase that they had made that year. I checked it out later, and immediately became hooked on her deodorant and handmade soaps. I’ve given her stuff as gifts and recently brought her deodorant and soaps to a favorite things party.

Through my own curiosity and desire to promote local and sustainable businesses, I decided to reach out to Marisa, an eight-year resident of Park View, and find out more about her business.

Why were power and lights flickering across the area last week?

On Wednesday, November 11th, the local Twitterverse and email listservs lit up about homes being in the dark. People from Park View up to Brightwood and over to Crestwood and 16th Street Heights all commented that their lights were flickering on and off. What was going on?

In Park View, the Park Morton equity plan goals get support by ANC 1A; residents still concerned

The Park Morton Equity Plan is a resident-drafted series of recommendations to DC government authorities on how to address their public housing renovation needs, including enhancing residents’ employment opportunities, enacting a renovation plan in which the city builds replacement units before demolition, and increasing home ownership opportunities. Black-owned restaurants share impacts of Covid and racial justice advocacy on business

Black-owned restaurants share impacts of Covid and racial justice advocacy on business

Every restaurant I talked to had a different story. Fish in the Hood was concerned by neighborhood changes long before Covid arrived. Backyard Smoke Spot evaded closures because of its in-house convenience store. Mr. Braxton took a hit in sales due to Covid but has since largely recovered. Tsehay is still struggling and never saw tangible support from the promotion of Black-owned restaurants.

A guy robs Bank of America, seems to forget about his mask

The Bank of America at 3500 Georgia Avenue in Park View was robbed on Tuesday, June 30th just before 1pm.

What struck me about this robbery was the man entered wearing a surgical mask (thanks Covid), and then proceeded to pull it down during the robbery.

Spring cleaning? You may find pieces of your family history

They say that the only people who like “hoarders” — people who don’t ever throw things out — are genealogists.

It’s because of materials that I found in relative's homes in Petworth and Park View that I've been able to tell stories about my ancestors.
