Yesterday I stepped forward to be vaccinated because I believe it’s important for me as a Black woman and as a community leader to persuade my Ward 4 neighbors to do the same through the power of my example. I also took this step so I can better serve our community. My role requires me to respond in person to emergencies, visit local businesses, and interact with constituents on a daily basis. Although I take every precaution possible by social distancing and wearing a mask, being immunized will add an extra layer of protection for all the people I encounter as your Councilmember.

Booker Parchment, from Mr. Braxton Bar & Kitchen in Park View, managed DC participation in a national Day of Service campaign this month to provide free meals to frontline workers, community centers, and others.

On March 6th and 7th, Mr. Braxton, in association with and supported by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, Food and Friends, and nutrition expert Camille Range MPH RDN, among others, provided 700 meals across the city.

DPR to open summer camp registration on Monday, 3/22

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation will be opening summer camps children 3-13 years old at 38 locations across all eight wards. Camps will be open from 9-5pm, with pre- and after-care available. Campers participate in traditional camp activities with social distancing, hand hygiene and face covering guidelines in place. Registration begins on Monday, March 22nd at 12pm.

WMATA 14th Street "bus barn" renovation faces criticism

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) closed the garage for renovations in 2019. The subsequent renovation project plans to preserve the garage’s historic façade, while rebuilding and updating the infrastructure for new and future bus systems, installing new maintenance and paint facilities, and building new retail and community meeting spaces.

Meanwhile, neighborhood advocates fear the renovation plan preserves that status quo, including, they claim, dangerous levels of diesel fumes.

Spring is on its way — and for a lot of children and adolescents that means playing team sports with their friends and peers. Baseball and softball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, golf, football, hockey, field hockey, volleyball, racquet sports… and so on. While there may be numerous options for some to play sports, many children are not given the opportunity to benefit from the mental and physical aspects of youth sports participation because the equipment is not affordable. A look at historical, systemic racism in Petworth real estate

Historians Mara Cherkasky and Sarah Jane Shoenfeld, of Prologue DC, along with GIS specialist Brian Kraft, have devoted efforts since 2014 to mapping racially restricted property covenants in DC to illuminate the racism ingrained into DC housing history. Similarly, Tanya Golash-Boza is a sociologist who grew up in Petworth and now studies race and gentrification. Both Cherkasky and Golash-Boza have presented in TedX seminars examining housing segregation in DC and Petworth-area gentrification. Petworth News met with these historians and sociologists to talk more about the history of segregation and racism in our neighborhood.

DCPS Term 3: In-person learning starts with equity and transparency questions

After a false start on February 1st due to snow, DC Public Schools starts Term 3 with some in-person learning at most elementary schools this week. After months of trying to reopen schools, city leaders have allowed each school through their Reopen Community Corps to develop their own plans. As a result some schools in upper northwest are bringing back a large percentage of their students, such as Key Elementary bringing back 75% of their students.

Petworth native, Linda Crichlow White and her husband Eric White, were featured on PBS’s Legacy List on January 11th. Linda and Eric had lived in their six-bedroom house in 16th Street Heights on the 1600 block of Nicholson Street NW for 28 years and were getting ready to downsize. Through mutual friends and acquaintances, she connected with the PBS show Legacy List, a show about the hidden treasures and heirlooms found while families downsize across America, and they were seeking to feature more black families on the show.
