VP Kamala Harris drops in at HR Records

US Vice President Kamala Harris visited HR Records on Kennedy Street on May 3, 2023

On Wednesday, May 3rd Vice President Kamala Harris visited HR Records on Kennedy Street. Inside she bought records by Charles Mingus, Roy Ayers, and Porgy and Bess with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.

Charvis Campbell, the owner of HR Records, said that a few hours before the visit he got a call saying that someone from the VP’s office was going to visit his store in a few hours, but they wouldn’t say who. He said he figured out who it probably was once he saw the Secret Service officers outside his stores.

Neighbors sensed someone important was coming when they spotted four men with earpieces in suits in front of HR Records that evening. Neighborhood group chats were swirling with guesses of who the VIP would be. Was Biden finally going to visit neighborhood favorite, Everyday Sundae? Then within 30 minutes a motorcade arrived and out came VP Harris to go shop at one of the nation’s only black-owned record shop, HR Records.

Charvis told Petworth News that he thinks the VP has good taste, and he was sorry to hear that she wasn’t able to bring her full collection of vinyls with her to her residence at Observatory Circle. Some of the records she bought were for her daughter, according to Charvis, and she spent about 15 minutes inside his store.

He wasn’t sure how she knew about his store on Kennedy Street, but the VP’s office said that they had been following his social media presence and were impressed. Charvis surmised maybe it was because of the Blackfire documentary that he was recently involved in, or maybe because he and the VP are both Howard alumni. Either way, he was happy to have such a high-profile visitor!

You too can support our local businesses this Saturday, May 6th for live music:

DJ Zach Pleasant will start at 5pm, Dev Duff & Friends will start at 6, and Carly Harvey will start at 7:30 all in front of Anxo and Everyday Sundae.
