Think yoga isn’t for you? Think again, says Lighthouse Yoga studio

Yoga is not just a passing fad. According to a recent study, 36.7 million people in the United States already practice yoga, up from 20.4 million in 2012. That means that over 10% of the US population now already takes yoga classes (or practices at home), and another 24% have said that they are likely to start practicing in the coming year!

Luckily, Petworth residents have an easy way to get started. Lighthouse Yoga Center, a small, community-oriented and locally-owned yoga studio located at 4203 9th Street NW, offers a 6-week course called Yoga Fundamentals that’s a great way to introduce you to the practice in a non-competitive and unintimidating way.

REI hosts free outdoor activities, including free BikeShare

The outdoor sports and recreation store REI contacted me to share a press release that I think is pretty cool. REI is opening a new "flagship" store at the Uline Arena in Northeast DC, and to celebrate is holding a "United Outside" campaign to give DC residents a chance to enjoy the great outdoors through 100 days of outdoor events.

Granted, doing this survey might keep things heated, but I thought it would be interesting to see how people would vote. (As always, caveat that this isn't a scientific poll.) Their "Summer Garden Series" has over 50 gardening classes, composting workshops and interactive events going on over the summer and into the fall.) Walls of Books, the new community bookstore on Georgia Avenue in Park View, is hosting a fundraiser for the DC African American Legacy Foundation (DCAALF), on Saturday, June 25th from 6-9pm. A percentage of money raised going to the DC Books to Prisons project (“Programs like ours are one of the few options available to prisoners seeking books.”).
